Desert Space in the Poetry of Abu Kharash Al-Hudhali
Dr. Jumana Muhammad Nayef Al-Dulaimi (pp. 79–107)
Abstract
The desert acts as a spatial, temporal, or symbolic component, but its visibility varies according to the emotional states created by human experience, giving each encounter a unique presence and perspective. Travelers, traders, and poets experience the desert differently, and each poet contributes a distinctive vision. The Tramps and Hathilid poets, in particular, depict the desert vividly in their poetry. The Sahara emerges as a grand architectural space, whose strangeness grants it privacy and uniqueness, structured by each poet through linguistic choices to convey reality or imagined spaces. This symbolic or mythical space can form multiple worlds that intersect, diverge, or complement one another, creating a dynamic and multifaceted portrayal of the desert.
